World Environment Day 2014

World Environment Day 2014 will be marked on Thursday 5th June. 2014 has been declared by the United Nations General assembly as ‘the international year of small islands states’ and in line with that, this year’s theme of the WED celebrations will be ‘Raise your Voice Not the Sea Level’. World Environment Day has been an avenue for UNEP to encourage positive environmental action from all spheres around the world. This year’s theme aims at creating awareness on the effects of climate change and also call for the reduction in carbon emissions. Climate change has been known to lead to global warming which causes rise in sea levels. In Kenya the celebrations are organised by the National Environmental Management Authority, and there will be a national event that will be held in Ngomeni area, Magarini Sub County in Kilifi County that is at the coast that is already witnessing the effects of rise in sea level.

Save Nairobi National Park

Environmentalists and conservationists have in recent times come out strongly to oppose the government's plan to construct the SGR through the Nairobi National Park. There is an argument that this will create a dangerous precedent for our country as infrastructure development is likely to be put on the fore front at the expense of environmental protection. The same project is also believed to cause destruction of the wildlife habitat. However, some like President Uhuru Kenyatta and Dr. Richard Leakey have supported the proposal claiming the impacts won't be adverse. I came across the EIA report for this project and decided to share a portion of it regarding the expected impacts and mitigation measures to be put in place. Going through it we can all draw our conclusions on whether the project is justified to pass through the park or not. Read for yourselves below an excerpt of the same. Isiolo Solar Streetlighting

Isiolo county has moved a step in promoting environmental conservation by embracing the use of solar in powering street lights within isiolo town. This is a welcome idea to most of the local residents who believe that this project will enhance security levels in the town. But the other most important point to note is the use of renewable energy of solar power. Isiolo has plenty of sunlight hours which makes it a very important resource of energy if well tapped. Similar initiatives have been initiated in Nairobi too. We hope more towns will come up with such projects that are environmentally friendly.
