The KenGen Great Dams Race

Kenya mostly relies on hydro-generated electric power. This means that dams where these plants are based need to have enough water to run the turbines constantly. The dams are fed by various rivers which originate from different water catchment areas. It is in light of this need tha  t Kenya’s electricity producing company KenGen came up with the idea of the Great Dams Race which will happen on 14th June 2014 at the Masinga Dam. The aim of the race is to encourage and support local efforts for environmental conservation. The theme of this race will be ‘You Run, Kenya goes Green’.



Funds raised from this event will go towards efforts to conserve the forests within the seven forks ecosystem. The seven forks dams are the source of about 50% of Kenya’s power supply on the national grid.

There will be lots of fun activities for the whole family including boat rides, picnics, entertainment and a tour of the seven forks dams. The race is open to individuals and corporates to participate. So let’s come out, have fun as we support this worthy cause.

Its yet another moment we mark the World Environment Day and this year the theme focuses on the fight against air pollution. Air pollution has become a big concern especially due to it's link to climate change as well as health concerns with an estimation of 7 million deaths worldwide majority of them being women and children. Some of the causes of air pollution are agricultural activities, transportation, industrial emissions, poor waste management, use of non environmentally friendly fuels among others. "Air pollution, a silent killer" is the main topic of discussion this year and it aims to sensitize the public of the dangers that are posed by air pollution. The Tree Challenge 2016

The first thing that would come to the mind of most Kenyans when the name Guinness is mentioned would be beer. Well, I wont be talking about alcohol here for now but this relates to the Guinness World Records. Most of us probably have totally no idea of any Kenyan or events relating to Kenya that feature in the Guinness World Record Books. Personally the last one i can recall is Kimani Maruge as the oldest pupil.
